Hi all I have just purchased a new Toshiba laptop as
well as a Sam sung C5220 mob
phone I have bought this mob because it has a blue tick with Telstra next G network I also bought a $60 recharge that will last 12 months if I don't use it too often ,as I have 2 X nokias on an OPTUS plan the USB modem is also Next G and is a 7.2.I'm on a 24 month plan that allows me 1 gig per month for a half price $29 P/M 1st 12 months then the last 12 months is back up to $60 P/M they both can be connected to an external car
antenna which I have just purchased its an RFI model no CD2195 high gain mob
phone antenna for CDMA,next G or GSM use all I need to buy are the patch leads for them both and with any luck we should be able to keep in touch with the family in some remote areas ,what I'm asking is that if anyone has any advice on the set up weather good or bad PLEASE let us know as I can rectify it in the next 2 weeks otherwise we are finally off WOO HOO!!
Cheers all!

Appart from the external
antenna, we have been using the same setup for the past 4 months, with good results on a 3 month trip to FNQ.
The mob
antenna is the next to buy item that as you say will improve the range.

Well you have bought it so a bit late for advice I suppose.
Perhaps a read of the thread re MOBILE BROADBAND would give you advice.

Hi
John, sounds like the exact set up I have just brought with the 21 USB Modem half price deal. Can I ask, are you planning to go on holidays or are you doing a lap of Oz? If you are doing a lap of Oz, are you going to have your
home phone disconnected?
Karen
(I'll tell you why this might sound a bit of a stupid question when I get your answer!)

Hi Graham,
I have asked this because I had reason to question the knowledge that the person at the
shop had and I have warned him that if he is wrong or he has given me the wrong advice (again LOL!) that I WILL be back ,he already had given me a bum steer with the usb stick as he suggested that I use an
antenna for the mob as
well as USB yet he processed the wrong usb stick that had no provisions for it then tried to say there was nothing he could do about it!
Karen ,I'm happy to hear you have the same set up and no I cant disconnect my
phone as that's why I get the deal I'm getting Im sure that you also get that deal if you have a mob with them as
well, have you started using yours yet?
Cheers.

Hi
John, yep I have. We are now living in our van full time and are about to start our 5 year trip around Oz. The fella at the bigpond
shop did not tell me that if we had our
home phone disconnected, (as we have since sold our house) that the half price deal was not available to us. We got the deal for the first 3months, but then we had the
home phone cut off when we moved out of the house, so I am now paying the full price..................damn. Anyway, happy with ours, although we have not started travelling yet. I have used it away on weekend trips and it has worked fine. We are on the 5GB plan.

Hi Karen.
We plan to sell up and move on the road fulltime in the next few months, it can't come fast enough.
I need to stay connected to the net, but the chap at the
shop said that we would have to change our e-mail address, I don't really want to change.
We will be getting a similar plan to yours.
Did you have to change your e-mail ?.
Thanks,
peter and doreen

Hi Guys, no we have the same email address we have had for the last 11 years. It is an old dial up one which I pay $25 a year to be able to still use it. I hate changing mobile numbers and email addresses. I just set up another email and used the one we have now. I did have to register with a new one to get started, but I will never
check it, and I dont give the new one out. I really dont think those Telstra salesmen no anything at all. I have done exactly oppiste to everything they told me would not be possible.........................lol. They are idiots in those shops!
We cant wait to hit the road full time at the end of January,,,,,,,,,,,,bring it on......lol. Our house settled 3 weeks ago and we have been living in the van since.

Hi Karen,
Thanks for your reply.
We will ask the Telstra guys again, maybe we will find one who is interested in keeping customers, not just selling mobile
phone plans.
Again, many thanks.

Have a read of the thread Wireless Mobile Internet where I put a long post about Telstra USB modems.
The staff in the shops would be lucky to find the door to go
home sometimes I reckon.

Get yourself a gmail or a hotmail address and changes of ISP's then do not affect your emails. Good old telstra rip off strikes again.

Hi Angler, you can take your email address with you. We have had the telstra one with Optus and Bigpond. They are happy to let you keep it and it is a bigpond.com.au address.

Hi Guy's
My sister put me onto an "off-shore" email provider almost 2 years ago, for a 1-off fee (>$20US) you can have the same email addy for life, has been a god send to have since I have had to change providers a couple of times since moving to regional QLD. Have a look at www.fastmail.com
regards
Shane
